Robert Hass served as the nation's Poet Laureate from 1995-1997. His books of verse include Sun Under Wood (1996), winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award in poetry, and Human Wishes (1989). He has also written prose (Twentieth Century Pleasures) and has collaborated with Czeslaw Milosz on the translations of his poems. A professor of English at the University of California, Berkeley, Hass lives in the San Francisco Bay area.
